I’ll start with my story, speaking of the time when using copyrighted software become disturbing to me. I was in a class, a coding class, learning on mobile application development. Sure enough as part of the program you are advised on possible money-minting ways to attach to your software, in-app purchases and the like, right?
My mind blows up at this fact. I can actually make money and to think I had come for this program for bragging rights and just to add that it was a free program, you only had to pay a refundable amount that you could redeem upon successful upload of your app in the online market. So there you go, another plus for me besides speeding away the days of the long vacation.
However the high spirits were diminished with viewing the other side of the coin. We use software that legitimately were made by programmers, long serving hours of code and logic and design; just for another guy to bypass some security, have cracked version of the software and upload it almost immediately the legit one was put up online. I mean, what gives? And you’ll notice even the owners pages rank lower (obviously owing to the algorithm behind page ranking used by search engines) than these others. Well, that’s how it is and I just may add that we, Kenyans do enjoy freedom for acquisition, distribution and consumption (read: use) of the result of this cycle.
Wake up call! Yea, sure the use of these (and it cuts across to movies, mp3s, software, pictures, etc.) ‘simplifies’ life but even in the least bit if not morally then in the sense of humanity there are some casualties as we ride on! The music industry, film industry, programmers, photographers, these are just the directly affected but let’s face it, the list is endless.
Your call? It starts with you. Start by the manageable, using YTD instead of IDM; Linux OS instead of Windows (for the tech-savvy doing this will double as training on the unique Linux environment; particularly Zorin is termed as the gateway to Linux for Windows users) Some may think that we are getting over ourselves here but considering everything, but this is a good start.
